Ep. 88 - So I Married an Axe Murderer (1993)
Thursday Feb 15, 2024
Thursday Feb 15, 2024
Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained.
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve welcome back our favorite boils and ghoul - Naterade, Thon and Logan of the Ghoulish University podcast for our Valentine's Day special to discuss the 1993 Mike Myers banger, So I Married an Axe Murderer - a film with an exquisite ensemble cast and a smattering of all time cameos from the likes of Phil Hartman, Charles Grodin, Stephen Wright and Michael Richards.
Join us as we wax lovingly about early/mid-90's film and pop culture including flashbacks to Carmen Sandiego and Beethoven era Charles Grodin, the oustanding performances of the supporting cast that really tie the room together, react to weirdest things we've ever eaten and get pissed on some good ol' ham fisted Scottish stereotypes.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, dare to give love another chance whilst navigating the slings and arrows of paranoia, familial eccentricities and fear of commitment in a windy and nostalgic trip down Lombard Street.
Kid don't sell your dreams so soon!
Let's wax this pleasure spiked with pain porpoise.

Ep. 87 - Bad Influence (1990)
Thursday Feb 08, 2024
Thursday Feb 08, 2024
Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained.
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve raise the flag and welcome back esteemed guest of honor (Ruth's) Chris from the Mount Molehill podcast to rap about a flick he recommended - Bad Influence from 1990 starring James Spader and Rob Lowe, a film that Chris has categorized under the sub-subgenre he coined himself "the disruptive stranger" which perfectly encapsulates the essence of the film and I'm stealing the phrase effective immediately.
Join us as we dive in fin first to discuss one of the best colloquialisms of all time - in this case for the harmonica aka the mouth harp and almost get sidetracked with future plans to cover Crossroads starring Jami Gertz and Ralph Macchio. We'll also discuss the films odd similarities to I Love You Man, and touch on G-Baby's new obnoxious Tank Girl/Aquabats/Simon Birch glasses.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, ride the waves of intrigue in this tantalizing punch bowl of suspense, psychological manipulation, and moral ambiguity - just the kind of cocktail we've come to expect here at WTP.
Special note - we recorded this episode the day before the terrible news of Carl Weathers' passing and we happened to mention him at the top of the episode by pure happenstance. Besides being an iconic action star in films we've all seen a hundred times from Apollo Creed to Action Jackson to Predator to Chubbs, by all accounts he was one of the great humans in the world -- thus from this point forth, he shall be posthumously recognized as one of our patron saints. So pour one out, rest in peace Chubbs - good night sweet prince.
We've only just begun to live, white lace and promises baby.
Let's wax this disruptive porpoise.

Ep. 86 - Children of Men (2006)
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Thursday Feb 01, 2024
Welcome to Waxing the Porpoise, the podcast that dives deep into the unexplored depths of cinema and occasionally the unexplained.
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve plunge headfirst into the dystopian depths of acclaimed director Alfonso Cuarón's cinematic masterpiece from 2006, Children of Men - a film that explores themes of hope, sacrifice, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Join us as we discuss another Clive Owen led intrigue laden banger, this time supported by Michael Caine's burnt out John Lennon-styled hippie pot grower activist, wax philosophic about faith and chance in perpetually grey London, and finally get to the gut punch that is the conclusion of the film tempered in redemption.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, traverse a landscape where women have become infertile and the world has fallen into depravity and despair - perhaps a modern day parable about just how fragile society really is. In a world gone mad and set aflame, the porpoises might just be the only ones keeping their cool.
It's called a leap of faith Jack.
Let's wax this overcast porpoise.

Ep. 85 - Devil in a Blue Dress (1995)
Friday Jan 26, 2024
Friday Jan 26, 2024
This week on Waxing the Porpoise G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve will attempt to unravel the mysteries, complexities, and emotional nuances of the somewhat forgotten gem, Devil in a Blue Dress from 1995 which stars none other than Denzel Washington, one of the most highly revered patron saints of this program.
Join us as we discuss 1940's post WW2 racial tensions in Los Angeles, pay our respects to Tom Sizemore and flashback to some of our favorite past roles of his, and finally Steve share with us a trifecta of Amazon reviews that will be sure to tickle your ok boomer bone.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, once again find themselves plunged into the depths of the silver screen as we attempt to avoid cinematic detours in post-war Los Angeles with the finesse and swagger only Denzel can bring.
Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins? One of the all time greats. Stand on it.
Let's wax this porpoise in a blue dress.

Ep. 84 - The Spanish Prisoner (1997)
Friday Jan 19, 2024
Friday Jan 19, 2024
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve once again dive deep into the murky waters of cinema and surface with insights sharper than a dorsal fin as we cover The Spanish Prisoner from 1997 - a rather interesting PG entry in David Mamet's filmography that unfolds like a meticulously orchestrated symphony that'll keep you guessing, but does it hit the right notes?
Join us as we discuss comedy gold by way of Ye, Steve enlightening G-Baby on "The D.E.N.N.I.S. System" and how it dovetails into this picture, the prospect of getting shanghai’ed in a foreign country, and alliteration notwithstanding, the downright diabolically discordant dialogue of this film.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, once again find themselves plunged into the depths of the silver screen. With the finesse of skilled mariners they attempt to glide through the intricate currents of this high-stakes confidence game - a mesmerizing spectacle that unfolds like an underwater chess match, where every move ripples with strategic intent and the waves of suspense lap at the shores of mystery.
For any Bone Thugs fans out there, on Crossroads is it "and I miss my Uncle Charles Jones" or "Charles y'all"?
Let's wax this buffaloed porpoise.

Ep. 83 - The Ghost Writer (2010)
Thursday Jan 11, 2024
Thursday Jan 11, 2024
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve cover 2010's The Ghost Writer, a book adaptation directed by the controversial figure Roman Polanski and stars Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan and Olivia Williams. Between all the political intrigue, deception, manipulation, war crimes and paranoia - this underseen gem will keep you busy.
Join us as we discuss equilibrium shifting vortices, New York mayor Eric Adams and why he should do less interviews, address the obligatory confusion between this flick and the Nic Cage Ghost Rider as well as the early 90's PBS kids show Ghost Writer and because we recorded this a little in advance, we'll finish off with a few favorite classic and a couple deep cut holiday flick recommendations as we skate right on by the season and into the new year.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, guided this time by Obi-Wan himself are once again beckoned to follow a mystery wrapped in an enigma all while we try not to get in over our blowholes - may the phocoena be with us.
He's a ghost, and he writes to us. Ghostwriter.

Ep. 82 - The Last Samurai (2003)
Thursday Jan 04, 2024
Thursday Jan 04, 2024
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve are back in force to discuss 2003's The Last Samurai, a film that's like a meditation on honor, respect, and the fine art of not getting your head lopped off. Think of it as a cultural exchange program where the curriculum includes swordplay and soul-searching.
Join us as we discuss how the film attempts to contain the twin dragons of Tom Cruise's Nathan Algren and Kats -"Don't Call Me Mats" - umoto played masterfully by Ken Watanabe, the age old magic movie trope of overcoming substance addiction overnight, and finally we'll recognize Tony Goldwyn as perhaps one of the best underrated movie villains of all time?
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, dare to look inward and overcome our self-loathing to explore themes of cultural assimilation, honor, and the time tested clash between tradition and modernity - time is a flat circle, etc.
This is a very good conversation.
Let's wax this honor-bound porpoise.

Ep. 81 - The Kid Detective (2020)
Thursday Nov 09, 2023
Thursday Nov 09, 2023
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve attempt to shake off their Halloween hangover with a little hair of the dog tempered with a few chuckles and some good old fashioned gumshoe-style investigation in the criminally underseen smacker of a whodunnit, The Kid Detective from 2020.
Join us as we discuss the perils of over-inflating your child's ego, self pity, and grappling with the idea of who you are in your head versus who you are in the world.
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers on the path of redemption, endeavor to overcome the tragic hero's hamartia in this kind of dark comedy, neo-noir, kid on bike crossed with Encyclopedia Brown for adults, all while attempting to dissect the cleverly woven narrative, unearthing its twisted charm culminating in a multiple twist conclusion that had even our porpoise pals scratching their fins in odd amusement.

Friday Oct 27, 2023
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve are pleased to welcome Logan and Thon of the Ghoulish University podcast to close out our 2 month ode to Halloween with The Midnight Hour from 1985. a film that is highly emblematic of the spirit of spooky season.
Don't be a pooper - join us as we wax autumnal discussing this festive flick with a soundtrack that's kicking like Van Damme, Levar Burton playing a goofy tv movie predator, hypothetical necrophilia QUESTION MARK, and get treated to a little Red I mean Dead Foreman.
The porpoises, midnight hour companions and keen observers, dare to raise the undead inadvertently, invoke a time stamped curse and throw a party in this big kids on bikes without the bikes having, PG-13 attempt at Night of the Demons.

Saturday Oct 21, 2023
Saturday Oct 21, 2023
This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve get spooked talking about the paranormal - ghosts, premonitions, and a wicked haunted hotel in New England while we review The Innkeepers from 2011, Ti West's sophomore outing and follow up to his break out House of the Devil from 2009.
Join us as we give Zak Bagans the night off to embark on our own ghost adventure and rap about the Yankee Pedlar Inn as depicted in the film and it's real life rumors of hauntings and unexplained occurrences, defend the honor of another patron saint of the porpoise, a one Leonard Kravitz, and try to suss out the meaning of the saying "I'm a pumpkin, I gotta kill the snake."
The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, packed up, got a grip, came equipped, grabbed their proton packs out the back and they split to try and confront the phantasmagorical horrors with-inn the Yankee Pedlar.

Only the choice nugs
Unsatisfied with dedicating an entire podcast to a singular topic, hosts G-Baby and Steve embark on a journey of discovery decided by chance - each episode one of three possible topics will be examined. We’ll either review a hidden (or not-so-hidden) cinematic gem previously unseen by the resident film neophyte Steve; discuss any number of strange, mysterious, or otherwise unexplained events; or finally a random wild-card topic of our choosing. We’re here for the deep cuts; only the choice nugs as it were. Guided by G-Baby, the sage shaman of useless information himself, we’ll see what Steve’s been missing out on in cinema and learn about some weird stuff along the way. Tip up your cup and throw your hands up - let’s wax this porpoise.
